Instagram updates you need to know about

I’m not ashamed to admit that a highlight of my working day is when a new social media update appears in my inbox. As soon as I read it, I start to think about how I can apply this new feature to improve my client campaigns.

Lately I’ve been seeing a lot of updates to arguably one of my favourite social media channels – Instagram. I like to say I was an early adopter and have been a fan ever since – for both personal and business reasons.

Today I’d like to share with you my top three updates from the last few months.

Zoom

Hot off the press is the introduction of Instagram Zoom, which allows you to pinch to zoom on photos and video in your feed. Want to zoom in on that cute puppy’s smile? Well, now you can!

Already I’m thinking of ways in which we could use this new feature. Perhaps for some type of treasure hunt, where you have to zoom in to claim a discount code? Or if you’re a fashion retailer it could allow your customers to zoom in on the detailing on specific garments? Several leading brands have already taken advantage of this new feature to help drive user engagement.

If you do want people to zoom in on your pictures and videos then just make sure you’re using the highest quality picture or video you can.

Zoom is available now for Instagram on iOS and will be available on Android in the coming weeks.

Stories

With the introduction of Instagram Stories you can now create ephemeral slideshows of photos, short videos and Boomerang loops that last just 24 hours. You can capture all your moments during the day and put them all into Instagram Stories.

As always, a quick bit of research from across the web has highlighted dozens of brands that have already been experimenting with this new feature – and a lot could be said for first mover advantage (early bird catches the worm and all that).

Mercedes-Benz has recently used it to document a behind-the-scenes story for one of their photo shoots. It includes a mixture of pictures and videos showcasing the latest features of the vehicle.

Starbucks have also experimented by showcasing its iconic caffeinated drinks for the summer. Again, using a combination of video and photos.

From what I have seen so far, nothing has blown me away in terms of creativity. I do feel that, on occasion, we all get caught up in a brand new social feature without really thinking about how it really fits into the overall strategy of a campaign.

Analytics

I love data and I love insights, so this is perhaps the update I am most excited about.

Instagram has recently rolled out its highly anticipated Insights feature, which provides analytics about a user’s account directly in the app. You can see the most popular times and days that your followers are on Instagram, along with follower demographics and post impressions. View follower locations by country or by city, or break down the gender and age of your followers.

In a world where data is king, anything that can provide us with more information about our customers to help us to create better campaigns gets my vote.
